Permanent Yellow, Irgazine Red, Heliogen Blue and Co.; Towards an improved micro-identification of synthetic organic pigments and dyestuffs in works of modern art
Date: 12 September 2008
Place: Munich, Germany
The identification of synthetic organic pigments and dyestuffs in modern and contemporary works of art has increasingly come into the focus of art-technology and conservation science over the past years. Today the variety of applied spectroscopic and chromatographic methods is considerable, yet a reliable and complete determination of synthetic organic pigments and dyestuffs in minute samples taken from paintings, textiles or print works is still a challenging analytical task. The Munich workshop, which is being held at the end of a 3-year research project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), aims to offer a discussion forum for museum scientists active in the field to present latest research results .
We hope to bring together an international group of experts for this day to openly share their experiences with the various analytical techniques and sample treatment approaches applied today in the field. Furthermore, the lectures will centre on recent findings of organic pigments and dyestuffs in diverse works of modern art or historic material collections thus contributing to the still limited art-technological knowledge of the history of use of these important artist materials.
For participants, who arrive on Thursday 11th September, we offer a guided tour through the Pinakothek der Moderne (in English) with our curator Dr. Bernhard Schwenk. The participation in the workshop and the guided tour is free of charge. Since there is only a limited number of ca. 35 places available in the institute`s seminar room, we recommend that you register as soon as possible, preferably via e-mail and not later than 31 May 2008.
Please, do not forget to announce whether you would also like to take part in the guided tour and/or the Get-together on Thursday evening.
All participants are requested to make their own hotel reservations. September is a very busy month in Munich with many congresses and fairs. Therefore we strongly advise you to make your booking very quickly! From our experience, the HRS Hotel Reservation Service (www.hrs.com) is a very useful address for online-reservations in Munich.
Furthermore, there are three small hotels close to the Doerner Institut and the Pinakotheken, which offer reduced room rates to our guests: Hotel Carlton **** (www.carlton-garni.de), Hotel Savoy *** (www.savoy-garni.de) and Hotel Antares ** (www.antares-garni.de).Please let the hotel know that you are guests of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen.
