Easel paintings: structural behavior and failure mechanisms

Date: 11-12 March 2009
Place: Valencia, Spain

(Lecture Hall of the Rectorate Building)

Lecturers: Marion F. Mecklenburg, Laura Fuster-Lopez

Languages: English (with simultaneous translation into Spanish)

Objectives: The aim of the course 'Study of the mechanical and dimensional properties of painting materials' is to provide a deeper knowledge on single artists' materials and their interactions as well as to understand the behavior of easel paintings when subjected to different environmental conditions.

The course is designed to learn about the forces acting inside a painting, the failure mechanisms as well as how to minimize the damage induced in paintings by the environment. The course also addresses questions related to the requirements of methods and materials to be used in conservation treatments as a function of their structural compatibility with the work of art.

This course is addressed to conservators and conservation scientists that want to gain insight into the mechanical properties and dimensional response of artists' materials with the aim to understand the behavior of paintings and to predict the allowable environmental ranges for their proper structural stability.

Sessions:

1. Relative Humidity: defining the concept
 The psychometric chart
The dimensional response of painting materials to changes in moisture
The dimensional response of painting materials to temperature

2. Determination of the mechanical properties of artist's materials: The stress strain curve
 Forces acting in a painting
The behavior of paintings as structures

3. Failure Mechanisms

4. Structural suitability of materials for conservation
